Why Agents Need Receipts
AI agents need receipts because useful autonomy depends on visible evidence, not trust in a black-box action.
AI agents need receipts.
Not because agents are untrustworthy by default. Because useful autonomy depends on visible evidence.
If an agent takes action inside a company, the company needs a way to inspect what happened. What did the agent see? What did it decide? What did it change? What did it send? What did it refuse to do? What needs a human now?
Without receipts, the company is left with vibes.
That is not an operating model.
A receipt is more than a log
Logs are usually written for systems.
Receipts should be written for work.
A useful receipt explains the action in business terms: the intent, inputs, constraints, output, status, and next step.
It should answer:
- What was the agent asked to do?
- What context did it use?
- What action did it take?
- What changed because of that action?
- What confidence, limitation, or exception should a human know about?
- What is the next recommended step?
That is the difference between “the API call succeeded” and “the work moved.”
Receipts create accountability
Companies already understand receipts in other parts of the business.
Finance has receipts. Sales has activity history. Engineering has commits and pull requests. Customer support has ticket trails.
Agents need the same kind of operational evidence.
If an agent drafts a customer response, creates a research memo, enriches a CRM record, updates a roadmap, or recommends a decision, there should be a durable artifact that explains what happened.
Otherwise the work becomes difficult to trust, difficult to review, and difficult to improve.
Receipts make humans more effective
Human-in-the-loop systems often put the human in the wrong place.
They ask the human to inspect every small action, which destroys the leverage that agents were supposed to create.
Receipts allow a better pattern.
The agent can do bounded work, leave evidence, and escalate the parts that need judgment.
The human does not have to reconstruct the entire path. They can review the receipt, inspect the exception, and make the decision the system is not allowed to make alone.
That is a better use of human attention.
Receipts make memory better
Agent memory without receipts becomes mushy.
The system may remember fragments of conversations, summaries, or prior outputs, but it may not preserve the reason work moved from one state to another.
Receipts give memory structure.
They turn agent activity into durable company context:
- This was the request.
- This was the evidence.
- This was the action.
- This was the result.
- This is what remains unresolved.
That structure is what lets future agents pick up the work without starting from scratch.
The receipt is the product
For many AI systems, the generated output looks like the product.
The answer. The draft. The summary. The recommendation.
But in an operating company, the more valuable product may be the receipt around the output.
The receipt is what lets the company trust, route, audit, and compound the work.
